Carter is an Associate with the Firm. Prior to joining Azimuth Capital Management, Carter worked in Corporate Development at Gibson Energy, a North American liquids infrastructure company, where he focused on organic growth capital deployment, M&A origination and execution, and various capital markets activities. Before Gibson, he was a Corporate Banking Associate at BMO Capital Markets. During his time at BMO, Carter gained broad experience in various energy and transition subsectors, including upstream, midstream, sustainable fuels, oilfield services, and energy transition technologies.

Carter holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. During his time at university, Carter served as President of the Dalhousie Investment Society and was the Co-Captain of the Dalhousie Varsity Rowing team.

In his spare time, Carter enjoys hunting, cycling, and skiing. He remains active in the rowing community, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Calgary Rowing Club.

Kathy Woody is a Managing Director and Strategy Lead for Critical Minerals with Azimuth and a Ph.D. chemist with 15+ years of experience in technology development, business development and project leadership at major energy companies. Kathy’s responsibilities include development of critical minerals strategy, technology evaluation, and CEO of Azimuth minerals platform.

Previously, Kathy served as Principal Advisor of Energy Technology at Hess Corporation, as the executive leader responsible for energy transition and emissions reduction technologies. At Hess, Kathy led technology selection and implementation of large-scale projects designed to enhance sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of operations.

Prior to joining Hess, Kathy was the Director of Energy Technology for the Phillips 66 Emerging Energy business unit, responsible for leading energy transition technology investments. She also spent over 10 years as a director in Phillips 66 Research and Development leading technical programs focused on Energy Transition, including cutting-edge research in battery materials, solid oxide fuel cells, and solar technology. She holds over 40 patents and has numerous technical publications.

Kathy has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Chemistry from University of Kentucky.

Virat is a current Co-op student at Western University, pursuing a specialization in Economics with a minor in Political Science. At university, Virat was selected as one of ten analysts for the Ivey Private Capital Club, offering pro-bono financial advisory to North American Private Capital firms like Fengate Asset Management in Toronto and AXA Venture Partners in Paris. He also served as Podcast Lead for the Ivey Venture Capital Club.

In his free time, Virat enjoys playing chess and soccer, exploring the outdoors through hiking, and collecting watches.

Matt Horton is a working equity partner with Azimuth with over 20+ years of experience in commercial and investing expertise in new energy technologies. Matt is currently Chief Executive Officer at Voltera – a leading energy transition company that acquires, builds, owns, and operates strategically located, fit-for-purpose charging facilities. 

Prior to Voltera, Matt held the role of Executive Vice President of Energy and Charging Solutions at Rivian. His responsibilities include growing fleet infrastructure and charging network businesses as well as its energy storage activities. In addition to his Rivian experience, Matt also held the role of Chief Commercial Officer at Proterra, the leading player in the North American battery-electric bus market. While at Proterra, he managed the company’s product development and marketing activities, and held responsibility for the company’s sales effort across the transit vehicle, powertrain and energy services businesses, generating approximately $1B in total sales.

Matt has significant experience in raising capital in the clean energy and environmental sectors. Prior to Proterra, Matt completed several investments at both Garage and @Ventures respectively before joining Propel Fuels as Chief Executive Officer, where he led the company through five years of strong growth, doubling revenue every year during his tenure, and landing the company on the Inc. 500 as one of the fastest growing private companies in America.

When he’s not working on building innovative companies, Matt enjoys spending time with his family exploring the mountains, forests and beaches around their home in Pescadero, CA.  Matt is a committed outdoorsman and conservationist, and enjoys most active outdoor sports including backpacking, rock climbing, biking, surfing, and fly fishing as well as a new hobby – climbing giant coastal redwood trees.  He is also an avid reader and has a passion for travel to wild, out-of-the-way places.

Melissa was previously a strategist at Google X for an electric grid moonshot and an investor at BlackRock, where she managed low carbon transition portfolios and hedge funds.

Melissa holds a dual Bachelor of Science in Environment and Finance from the University of California, Berkeley. Melissa earned her MBA from Stanford University and her Master in Public Administration from Harvard University, where she was winner of the Harvard President’s Innovation Prize and a J.F. Kennedy scholar. In graduate school, Melissa co-taught and researched renewable energy policy, climate ventures, and climate risk disclosure. Melissa was Finalist for the Financial Times’ Bracken Book Prize for writing on energy transition leadership. She has passed CFA Level II.

In her spare time, Melissa is an a runner, triathlete, cook, and Co-Host of New York City’s My Climate Journey (MCJ) community.

Scott is a Director with the Firm. Scott’s responsibilities include evaluating potential investments, energy industry analysis, financial due diligence, and assisting current portfolio companies. He represents Azimuth as a Director on the board of Corex and as a Board Observer on the boards of Monolith and H Cycle.

Prior to joining Azimuth Capital Management, Scott worked with Nexen Energy as part of the resource development team where he gained technical energy experience. Previously, Scott worked with CIBC World Markets as part of the equity research group and with FirstEnergy Capital as part of the investment banking team.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology from Queen’s University. While at the University of Alberta, Scott was involved with the Program for Research and Investment Management Excellence (PRIME), where he was responsible for managing the Industrials sector. Scott has passed CFA Exam Level II.

Outside of work, Scott enjoys skiing, cycling, golfing, traveling, and following NHL hockey.

Ryan is a Managing Director with the firm. He is a proven leader in structuring domestic and international projects with a diverse legal and commercial background spanning 20 years. Most recently, as VP Commercial with Steelhead LNG and Chief Operating Officer of ACM LNG, Ryan has held a broad senior executive role, including oversight of the commercial value chain, corporate and tax structuring and project finance strategy. In this role, Ryan also led negotiations in North America, Europe and Asia on business-critical activities (e.g. equity investments, LNG offtake, gas supply, site acquisition, engineering agreements, power supply, investment advisory mandates and credit facilities), as well as establishing and implementing an intellectual property strategy, including leading trademark and patent applications.

In pre-Steelhead roles, as both a business and legal advisor, Ryan led the establishment of domestic and international joint ventures within energy and housing sectors, advised both proponents and financiers of renewable energy projects (wind, solar, hydro, geothermal) and supported acquisitions and divestments of energy projects in North America and Europe.

In addition, as a solicitor qualified in Canada, England and Wales and New York, Ryan has represented some of the world’s largest institutional and investment banks and asset managers in each of those jurisdictions in complex international capital markets and lending transactions.

Ryan previously served as a director on the board of the Vancouver Aquarium and remains a member of the organization’s Governance Council.  He is an avid golfer and enjoys adventure travel, the highlight of which thus far was a tall ship sailing journey from Argentina through Antarctica to South Africa.

Heath DePriest is an Operating Partner with Azimuth and a professional engineer with 25 years of broad technical, business. and supervisory experience including asset management, strategic development, growth capital implementation, and cross function optimization. Heath’s responsibilities include advancing work in Azimuth’s Low Carbon Fuels vertical, inclusive of broad strategy development and the evaluation of emerging technologies in the context of Azimuth investment opportunities. Heath is also a board member of Azimuth portfolio company, H Cycle, a platform designed to deploy proven waste conversion technology to produce low cost, low carbon hydrogen.

Heath is currently the Chief Operating Officer at Braven Environmental, a leading technology provider converting mixed waste plastics into feedstocks for second life plastic production. Prior to this, Heath held numerous key leadership positions at Phillips 66, one of the leading energy companies in the world. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Renewable Fuels and spearheaded the establishment of an Emerging Energy organization within the company focused on investments in renewable fuels, battery materials, carbon capture, and low-carbon hydrogen. His leadership drove the creation of a long-term renewables growth strategy as well as foundational investments and the creation of innovative joint ventures, establishing significant revenues streams and steering the company towards a sustainable future.
Previously, Mr. DePriest served as General Manager of Global Strategy, where he led the strategy, portfolio, and capital allocation process which culminated in a dynamic long-term vision focused on a sustainable and financially attractive future. As Manager, Midstream Growth and Strategy Execution, and subsequently as Managing Director, Midstream Terminals Business Development, he led the establishment of a new growth program that effectively deployed over $15B of growth capital leading to a Midstream organization providing $2B+ in annual EBITDA.

Dr. Cargnello is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Materials Science and Engineering, and Silas Palmer Faculty Scholar at Stanford University. In addition, Matteo leads the Cargnello Group, a research team with the objective of solving energy and environmental challenges related to chemical processes and catalysis. The group focuses on capture and conversion of carbon dioxide, emission control, reduction of methane and hydrocarbon emissions in the atmosphere, sustainable chemical practices through electro- and photocatalysis, sustainable production of hydrogen, carbon-based materials, chemical recycling of plastics, and sustainable cement manufacturing. Dr. Cargnello’s work has been recognized with numerous awards in
in addition to having published 140 papers in top scientific journals.

Dr. Cargnello received his Ph.D. in Nanotechnology from the University of Trieste and then went on to be a post-doctoral scholar in the Chemistry Department at the University of Pennsylvania before joining the Faculty at Stanford in 2015.

Recent engagements include support for the Shell Holland Hydrogen 1 project and other managed joint industry energy transition projects in the North Sea. Prior to MACH10, Wim founded GAWWER Management Consultancy, an entity providing project assurance reviews and supporting organizational excellence in project delivery. Prior to these roles, Wim held various senior leadership positions at Shell, including Project Director Integrated Gas, Project Director for LNG Canada and Project Director for LNG Portfolio Americas.
