Jeff van Steenbergen is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Azimuth Capital Management.
Azimuth is advancing a differentiated infrastructure development and investment strategy focused on energy and critical minerals with high impact applications for AI supply chains. Initially, through Azimuth Development Partners – AISC (ADP-AISC) as well as the PureVolt Energy and Nexaltis Minerals platforms. There is broader Azimuth focus on critical minerals processing, baseload clean power and storage, and low carbon fuels. Azimuth targets opportunities in North America, Japan and Europe. The Firm has its principal offices in Menlo Park, California and Calgary, Alberta, as well as has team presence in Houston, Vancouver and the Netherlands. Azimuth achieved a peak AUM of $5 billion and currently manages three funds and an active LP co invest program for leading university endowments, industrial / strategics, pension funds, insurance companies and certain European families.
Prior to jointly establishing the Firm, he was co-head of North American Energy with JP Morgan. Jeff has been active in the North American and international energy sector for 40+ years and has a wide range of experience in energy infrastructure development, technology and oil and gas as a private equity investor, investment banker and operator. He has a breadth of experience in operations and major project development in roles with ExxonMobil and in field operations with Schlumberger.
Jeff has been an investment professional for 30+ years and has experience building differentiated businesses and in private equity, venture capital and corporate finance. He also has 12 years of direct energy sector operating experience in North America, Asia and Western Europe, including eight years in frontier offshore drilling operations. While at ExxonMobil Jeff was part of a small group that had a first response role in respect of major oil & gas well control incidents around the world. Over his career, Jeff has worked across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
His education includes a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA in International Business and Finance from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Jeff also attended six Executive Programs at Stanford, INSEAD and Harvard focused on strategy, corporate governance, restructuring and corporate finance. He holds a US Coast Guard Master’s License (Captain) for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units and is a professional engineer registered in the Province of Nova Scotia.
Jeff currently represents Azimuth on the boards of Nexaltis Minerals, PureVolt Energy Systems, Mountain View Clean Energy, H Cycle, Enoflex, Monolith and Steelhead LNG. He is an experienced corporate director and over time has served on over 20 US, European and Canadian private and public company boards and five investment committees. Jeff has specific experience with complex corporate restructurings and working through a range of challenging corporate governance situations.
Jeff and his wife Kim have three children and seven grandchildren – all living in Calgary. Jeff’s interests include being as close as possible to oceans and mountains. He is a dedicated expert ocean kayaker and enjoys cycling and back country skiing. Jeff is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He and Kim have been involved with and supported the Banff Centre for many years. Kim and Jeff also support two uniquely talented Canadian performing artists who have achieved wide international recognition.
