Howard is an Operating Partner to Azimuth. He is a senior E&P executive with a broad international, operating and board experience set, underpinned by a strong technical background.
He has more than 40 years of experience, much of it with British Petroleum (“BP”), and over his career has held a variety of roles in North America, the Middle East, Australia and the UK. From 2001 to 2010 Howard was a Senior Vice President with BP responsible for setting the Subsurface functional direction and oversight of BP’s 2,500 engineers and geoscientists. During that period he also directed the R&D program and was responsible for the oil & gas reserves approval processes. Other senior roles held include CEO of BP Russia, President of BP Angola, Director of BP’s Exploration & Production Technology Group and Business Unit Leader for the Western North Slope of Alaska. Howard also worked on a number of international engineering assignments while employed by Schlumberger in the 1970’s.
His education includes a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and a Bachelors of Engineering (1st Class Honours) from the University of Sheffield. Howard also attended the Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program. In 2008, he was granted an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Herriot Watt University in Scotland.
Howard serves on Azimuth’s Independent Advisory Board and is on the board of Azimuth’s Connaught Oil & Gas Ltd. and Corex Resources Ltd. He is an independent director on the Board of Encana and has served on a number of private E&P boards. Previously, from 1997 to 2008, he chaired the Industry Advisory Board for the Institute of Petroleum Engineering in Edinburgh.
